English for Engineers and Career Panel
The second activity, titled “English for Engineers” was conducted in February 2023 in Dresden, Germany, under the organization of Dresden University of Technology. This program was specifically designed to introduce participants to the specialized English language used in the engineering industry. Its primary objective was to enhance participants’ proficiency in technical vocabulary and communication, enabling them to engage more effectively and confidently with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders in professional engineering contexts. The program emphasized the critical role of consistent and precise language as a foundation for scientific excellence, acknowledging that technical terminology constitutes approximately 15 to 20 precent of content in scientific documentation. To address this, the curriculum focused on assessing and improving participants’ technical vocabulary, academic writing, speaking skills, and overall scientific competence. The activity aimed to equip participants with the linguistic tools and confidence required to produce high-quality scientific outputs and interact effectively in professional environments. Learning activities included role-plays,
workshops, debates, and seminars, all designed to provide practical application of the skills being taught. A team of highly experienced trainers and consultants with dual qualifications—industry and business expertise combined with advanced language teaching credentials—facilitated the sessions. This unique blend of expertise ensured that participants received instruction tailored to the linguistic and technical demands of the engineering profession. Participants received detailed feedback, ratings, and recommendations from the lecturers at the end of the program. These evaluations provided actionable insights into their strengths and areas for improvement, further refining their technical communication abilities.
Concurrently, the “Career Panel” activity was held, hosted by the project partner, the Pyramid Group, in collaboration with Dresden University of Technology. This event served as a critical platform for facilitating
communication between businesses and participants while equipping students with essential skills for success in the engineering industry and labor market. The primary aim of the event was to help participants enhance their oral
presentation, body language, negotiation, and argumentation skills, which are indispensable for professional success. Additionally, the activity provided an opportunity for participants to refine their networking skills, preparing them for recruitment processes regardless of whether they were job-ready or just beginning their career exploration. Participants gained valuable insights into potential job options in engineering, understanding how their academic studies align with future opportunities in the field. Employers shared practical knowledge about the engineering profession, offering guidance on how to navigate real-world challenges that participants will encounter as they advance in their careers.
Having been engaged in mock recruitment interviews, participants received guidance on best practices, including what to do and what to avoid during job interviews. This activity allowed participants to experience a realistic recruitment scenario, building their confidence and preparing them for actual job interviews. Participants not only gained valuable tips for their future job search but also had the opportunity to work on their CVs and motivation letters, making it a significant takeaway from the experience. Moreover, at the conclusion of the panel, participants submitted drafts of their cover letters and resumes for a peer-evaluation feedback session. This exercise helped them to refine their written communication skills and gain constructive insights to improve the quality of their job application materials.
In terms of employer insights and networking opportunities, participants had the opportunity to interact directly with industry professionals, gaining a deeper understanding of employer expectations, desirable candidate qualities, and potential career paths in the engineering sector. The “Career Panel” was instrumental in bridging the gap between academic learning and professional application. It provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the skills and attributes valued by employers, while also equipping them with the tools to succeed in the competitive job market. By honing their communication, networking, and professional competencies, participants left the event with a greater sense of confidence and readiness to pursue their career goals. The insights gained from industry professionals, coupled with the hands-on activities, contributed to a well rounded learning experience that will undoubtedly support participants in their transition from academia to the engineering workforce.
